Video Signal Cable
Can a VGA cable carry HD video signal?

Can a VGA cable carry HD video signal as 720p or 1080i from a PC an HDTV? Or CompoNet HD cables / HDMI needed for a high definition signal?

VGA is analog RGB component video. It can carry video signals from High Definition (480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p). It is actually very similar to component video, is also capable of delivering a high definition signal. The difference is the use of YPbPr component video instead of RGB. DVI and HDMI are digital video signals, are also capable of carrying HD video signals. Since they are digital they can take longer distance signal without picking up interference. This makes DVI and HDMI preferable since it is a signal a little better, but for the common person will see virtually no difference between analog and digital HD high definition. The key to connect a computer to an HDTV is what connections are available on the PC and television, and what the resolution of your graphics card is capable of outputting, and what your resolutions is capable of displaying HDTV. If you have VGA graphics card output and the VGA input on your TV, while the graphics card can generate an HD signal (some only a few output HD resolutions), you can easily connect your PC or TV, even with your DVI computer. You can also buy a DVI to VGA converter for fairly cheap if you have DVI on your computer, but for HDTV VGA (VGA, but is less common on a TV, and if you have, probably also have DVI or HDMI). HDMI is the same as DVI except that it can also lead to an audio signal in one cable. This makes the question of a simple (cheap) DVI to HDMI converter and vice versa. For example, my PowerMac G5 has DVI output, I connected directly to my HD projector. The maximum HD resolution I can output my graphics card is current 1080i, which is also the best of my projector can display. Before I could afford a long enough DVI cable for video output of the projector, I used a DVI to VGA adapter to connect to my projector with a VGA. I was still able to get 1080i on my projector, however, digital is a little clearer, especially at a distance of 30 feet from my computer is from the projector. As I said, of the many people who have had nothing but watching movies on my projector with me, I'm the only one who noticed any difference when I switched from analog to digital, but spend much time manipulating video and study quality (his hobby).
